A Dose of Realness
There’s a Christian radio station I have listened to for years. They boast about their positive and encouraging content. And it’s true. If you are looking for positive and encouraging radio, this is your station—even the news takes on a similar spin.
I’ve hit my wall with said station. Yep. Don’t get me wrong. I love Christian music and I love the message in Christian music, but I can only handle so much positive and encouraging words from the radio hosts. That’s it. It’s really not the music. It’s the radio personalities.
Every time I listen (well today anyway) I feel like they are picking and choosing their words so carefully. You can hear the restraint in their voices. It’s as if someone is standing over them with duct tape in hand ready to tape their mouth shut should they utter the wrong words:
“You can share something personal, but don’t give too much information.”
“You can laugh, but not too hard.”
“You can tell a sad story, but smile the whole time you’re telling it.”
Oh for heaven’s sake people.
I’m in a punchy mood today. Sorry.
What I want to say. What I want to scream through the listener call line is, BE REAL! For the love of Pete, BE REAL!!
No worries. I didn’t call.
Positive and encouraging is a great concept—brilliant actually. But it needs a dose of realness to keep me listening.
At least today.
Krista,
I have recently switched to WAY FM. (Wally is hilarious). We have had an opposite aversion to “the other” radio station. There is one radio personality in the afternoon who seems to be drawn toward life shattering events and likes to discuss them on air…I have called the radio station and spoken with this professional to no avail. I have had to run to the radio to turn off the family, friendly station in order to avoid my kids hearing topics of suicide, abortion, and rape. Don’t get me wrong. I think (in time) these are topics that parents need to address, however I don’t turn on music to hear these things. These are topics that I plan on addressing when the time is right. Isn’t it funny how we have opposite views from this station? I do agree…the positiveness can seem fake if you are over exaggerating. Where is the balance and how do we find it? Hmm. I love reading your blog. Keep it up!
I TOTALLY agree. You really have pegged it for me. I have been annoyed for a long time, but really couldn’t figure out why,and hadn’t spent too much time thinking about it, actually. But that’s it. They just don’t seem genuine. I wonder what non-christians think when they stumble upon the dialogue. If I were them, it wouldn’t make me want to be a Christian. 🙂

Like (I think I need a like button). I like your comment and agree.
Thank you Lisa. We’ve started listening to WAY FM too. I love that station. Its seems that they have a good balance. They are funny, but not corny. They are appropriate, but edgy. They make me think, not role my eyes at their jokes or cry at their stories. I agree with everything you said, and there are times where I’ve had to turn off the other station because the subject matter is just too deep. That will be another post. “Filter People. Filter.”
We have had this discussion in the past and I agree we have to live life in “real-ville” otherwise we are fooling ourselves. MOM
