Random Thoughts from the Pew
Izzy has been joining us in Big Church lately. (Just to be clear, we sit on chairs, not pews, but that word fit the title of this post.) She’s caught in that awkward stage of feeling too old for her own class, and missing her friends who have moved up to middle school. So what’s a girl to do? Why go to church with her parents of course. Because not going is not an option in our family.
She really enjoys it. And what’s not to enjoy? Great worship leaders, cool band, and a relevant message that she listens to, and follows along with in her Bible. It brings me joy. And the biggest blessing in all this, she actually whispers when she needs to tell me something during the quiet parts. The girl has a great indoor whisper voice.
This is how the service went a few weeks ago–through the eyes of a 10 year old.
“Hey Mom, I had no idea Mr. Andrew played the drums. He is really good at it.”
Thanks Andrew Stevens—you do rock those drums.
“Oh Mom, Nora’s story is so interesting. I can’t wait to hear how it ends.”
Nora, you know how to deliver a captivating communion thought!
“I sure hope they remember communion for our WHOLE section this time. Remember when Dad had to get up and serve it to us because they all forgot?”
I do Sweetie, and here comes the plate now. Whew!
“Oh my goodness, Mom, Pastor Phil has the nicest dimples. I can’t believe it!”
Pastor Phil, you have many great attributes, but that’s the one that stood out this week to my observant daughter.
Believe it or not, I enjoyed the service myself that week, despite the humorous interruptions.
Izzy, you are a delight to sit with in church. You observe everything, and that’s wonderful. I especially like how you underline each scripture reference that the pastor speaks about. It’s a good way to get to know your Bible.
You are welcome to sit next to me anytime!
Izzy is such a sweetie! Viewing a church service through her eyes and ears is quite amusing but she gets it and is learning. She takes after her Grandma in underlining verses! I can’t wait to sit by her in church…..maybe I’ll learn something I never observe during a service. Maybe she could come to our church and I could give a report to the staff from Izzy’s view point. MOM
Krista, thank you for sharing your wonderful gift of writing with all of us and for sharing your amazing family. What a beautiful snapshot of your life and the gifts you are sharing with your daughters. We too are at the same stage as Izzy with our kids. I only wish my kids could whisper something other than, ‘what time is it?’
